If you feel that blueberries need a lot of hard work and preparation, you’re not alone, but you need to view the effort you exert in perspective to the potential return. Individual blueberry plants have been known to live as long as sixty years, so the work you expend on your plants can last a lifetime.

As your plants grow, they will require a certain bit of maintenance. You’ll want to remove any fruit buds for the first couple of years to allow the plant to thrive, and at three years some pruning will be in order in late winter to remove old wood and poorly placed limbs. You may want to remove some fruit buds to make the remaining ones develop into sweeter, larger berries.

Lowbush varieties should be pruned to the ground every two years. The pruned bushes won’t bear the year after pruning, so do half of your bushes one year then the other half the next.

Highbush varieties need to have all the six-year-old wood cut off, and any other pruning needed to alleviate crowding or to eliminate poorly developed stems.

If all this seems like quite a lot of trouble, well, it may sound worse than it really is if you consider the work is spread out over the year. But if you’re looking for a somewhat easier and more flexible solution, you might consider some of the Half-High varieties in containers. Don’t forget that you’ll still need several individuals for pollination, and you should move the containers to a protected, sunny place during Northern winters.
